Barbara & Tony Deakin

Barbara and Tony Deakin both joined Worcester Hospital Radio back in 1983

Their programme – Just For You – is a 2 hour request show presented each Friday evening from 8pm until 10pm. They are both Committee members, with Barbara being our Secretary and Tony the station’s Public Relations Officer. They both also undertake talks to clubs and organisations within the local area on Choice’s history and the service it provides (this is done free of charge although donations to our funds are greatly appreciated!)

Barbara and Tony have two daughters along with six grandchildren. Claire is also a member of Choice and assists in the publication of our monthly Newsletter. Barbara was employed by the NHS for 37 years at the Worcester Royal Infirmary’s Castle Street branch and in the last few years carried out duties as Medical Records Librarian. Tony was employed by local firm Lea and Perrins (makers of the famous Worcestershire Sauce) for some 36 years in a clerical/administrative capacity, retiring as Office Supervisor.

Their interests outside of Choice are many and varied, Barbara being a voluntary WRVS helper at their Ronkswood hospital shop, a committee member for the Friends of Worcester Royal Infirmary and, when time permits, "gardening". Tony, on the other hand, is an active member of Worcester Probus, gives talks on the history of Lea and Perrins, having appeared (many years ago) on "Down Your Way" and been interviewed about the company by the late Brian Johnson. He is also a supporter of Worcester City Football Club and carries out the duties of public address announcer at all home games (ably assisted by Barbara).

Tony and Barbara endeavour to make patients requests the main theme behind their programme "Just For You", visiting wards at Ronkswood and the Highfield unit prior to their Friday Night show, with their assistants Sarah Tummey and Richard Haywood. Every four weeks or so, the programme features an interview and the record selection of a guest celebrity (mostly drawn from the local community but occasionally from the world of entertainment) in an item called "Well It’s A Job". Showbiz celebrities are also included from time to time, examples being Ian Botham, Graham Hick, Frank Bruno, Patricia Routledge, Brian Conley, Penelope Keith and local lad Nigel Kennedy, to name but a few.
